Writing Alternative Text
Only use alt text if the equation is an image. If possible, use a real equation editor (e.g., MathML, Word equation editor). Images—even with alt text—are a fallback, not the best option. Read the equation in logical order, not visually. Describe what happens from left to right using relational words, such as "equals," "is proportional to," or "depends on", rather than describing the layout. Explicitly state any subscripts, superscripts, and coefficients, for example: "v squared," "x sub zero," "e to the power of negative t," or use words such as "plus," "minus," "times," or "divided by." Focus on the scientific relationship, not the formatting. Describe what the equation represents and the relationship between variables, not the font size, alignment, or visual arrangement. Include units, conditions, or constraints only if they are essential to understanding the equation's meaning or application.
