Definition

Graphical representation of data using visual elements like bars, lines, or slices to make information easier to understand and analyze than raw numbers. While this taxonomy lists common types of chart, the possible ways for visualizing data are potentially unlimited with new or hybrid designs emerging regularly. For the purposes of writing alt text it is useful to consider the chart’s analytical intent, for example: comparing values across groups; showing change over time; illustrating distributions; expressing hierarchical part to whole relationships; revealing correlations between variables; or depicting flows between states or categories. Authors may find it helpful to identify the primary goal(s) of the visualization and write alt text that conveys the key takeaway for each relevant objective, regardless of the specific chart form used.
